Painting has been dead for over a century, yet artists keep making them. Despite the invention of photography, video, and digital art, painting still remains a vital method of present-day artistic expression.

Even in a Post-Greenburgian era, full of dire predictions from critics, painting continues to be an important component of the vocabulary of contemporary art. The main appeal of painting lies in its inherent physical qualities: both liquid and solid, it forces its practitioner to think spatially and abstractly, rather than in a linear way. This immediate access to color, light, atmosphere, and form is as important as the product of such thinking.

Painters tend to think globally, to see the big picture rather than in parts, and to rely on experience and intuition, rather than logic. As shape and space merge in the mind of a painter, physical and emotional sensations combine into a one-of-a-kind product, which visually references the artist's hand, brain, and heart.

Even in photographs, prints, drawing, and sculpture, a painterly sensibility often persists in modern modes of thinking. Despite new tools and technologies, which promise to render physical painting obsolete, the liquid, nonverbal thought process seems to grow.

Painterly thinking is evident in cinematography, in theatre, in contemporary art, in bio-chemistry, literature, and education, as well as in other multidisciplinary fields.

In Quasi-Painting, I have chosen to exhibit nine emerging artists together, not necessarily because they make artwork with paint, but because they share a painterly sensibility, expressed nine different ways.

Pursuing her wish to talk about this article Claudia sent the article to Anne Banks, another Gallery 10 artist. Anne responded.

Dear Claudia, I like your idea of talking about painting....
And anyone who paints does not think that painting will ever be obsolete because it is so personal and connected to thoughts and emotions, like poetry.
Also like drawing, painting is not dependent on technology per se....It comes straight from the right brain, except of course when there is a grand scheme involved.

The criteria of excellence for painting, composition, etc are the same for design, Architecture and the arts in general, so it sometimes gets confusing..The same general standards about what makes any art good are valid in spite of the different media....We could have a discussion about what these criteria ARE, especially in recent contemporary art!!!

‘Igor Sikorsky Knew about Trees’

Helicopters without rotors encounter ‘kite-eating’ trees as Carlson’s cheerfully ominous paintings explore themes of power and vulnerability.

In 2004, New York critic Ed McCormack described Carlson’s style as “Abstract Realism”, where subjects are depicted fairly accurately but are then placed into contexts that “simultaneously emphasize their formal qualities and imbue them with a mysterious suggestiveness.”* Carlson continued this approach with new imagery in her Gallery 10 exhibition ‘Trees and Helicopters’ in 2006.

While the pictorial spaces in these earlier works offered a sense of location within the landscape, in ‘Igor Sikorsky Knew about Trees’ the horizon line drops out of view. The compositions in the 2008 paintings bring the viewer close up to the action and, as if elevated off the ground, at eye level with the intertwined branches generally associated with the crowns of large trees.

The show’s title pays homage to the diligent attention to practical questions that Igor Sikorsky brought to the process when he engineered his first helicopter, an aircraft that re-defined mobility. Carlson’s paintings evoke aspects of past and current conflicts where helicopters symbolize the power to reach anywhere, but have also come to be seen as an emblem for insufficient planning, short-cuts and arrogance.

Carlson exhibits internationally and in the United States. Her work is included in public, corporate and private collections in Germany, Italy, in the Netherlands and in the United States.

Pat Segnan in Italy

Gallery 10 artist Pat Segnan will be based in Venice until October 30, 2008. Over the past few years Segnan has established a profile as an exhibiting artist in Italy while maintaining her exhibiting status in the US.

In a September exhibition in Erba, Italy her works will be included in a group exhibition of the artists of Venezia Viva Gallery.

In October her collage mono-prints will be featured in a solo show at Venezia Viva Gallery in Venice.

Segnan, like artists through-out art history, translates the feeling of Venice, its water world and light and culture with grace notes of color and image references into her works. She says that working with the artist of Venexia Viva Gallery has strengthened her commitment to the traditions and craft of making art over following the trends of the moment.

Sarah Stout at Gallery 10

Sarah Stout's exhibition "New Sculptures and Prints" at Gallery 10 closes December 1.

In the works in this show Stout explores the qualities of translucence in abstract sculptures and prints.

Laminated fabric shaped over a mould or in folded sheets is the material developed for the sculptures, both relief and free standing.

Silk screen prints are likewise composed of many layers of translucent ink. Lines and color between the layers appear to recede into the depths of the composition.

"Artemus"

"One of a series of iconic images of the goddess.

Artemis, with her roots in the earth, is the huntress and protector of the wild things of the forest. She is the archetypal symbol of freedom and independence.

My work in the various media of drawing, painting, sculpture and collage is inspired by forms in nature, memories, the remembered shapes and colors of landscape, including architecture and the connections between earth and sky.

Archetypal icons figure in the paintings. The collages are metaphors on a small scale for larger structures in the world."

Anne Bamks is also the author of "What is Design". You can find out more about her book and read her articles about art and design on her website.

Anne Banks is an artist and educator who received her B.A. from Wellesley College and M.F.A. from The George Washington University. She exhibits her work in the Washington, DC, area as well as nationally and abroad. She is professor emeritus at Northern Virginia Community College where she was instrumental in developing a course in the history of design.

Claiming Space at the Katzen Museum

There is a terrific exhibition, Claiming Space: Some American Feminist Originators at the Katzen Museum at American University. So good, in fact, that Jessica Dawson has a large review of it in this morning's Washington Post.

The works in the show are choice! They bring back memories to those of us who were paying attention in those days. The curators Nrma Broude and Mary Garrard have selected a fine show and written an excellent catalog which clarifies the issues then - and now?

This is a show well worth seeing , not once but several times.

About the artist:

This is the first exhibition at Gallery 10 for George Iso. Iso is a Brazililan artist who is also a poet and a passionate traveler, living mostly in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. His abstracts often interact with the mood and light of the towns where he has lived and worked, like Paris, London, Barcelona, Stockholm and Rio.

This year, with exhibitions in London, Washington, and Rio, Iso is showing paintings that can be best defined as metaphors of time and space.

Art critic Ligia Canongia has said of his work,
"Iso's canvases construct a space with fragments, splinters, impulses of a subjective world-view. Pictorial space fluctuates and in it forms are suggested rather than defined. Colors are summoned to act as agents of this permanent mobility.

Artist statement:

According to Thorton Wilder, "whenever you get near the human race, there's just layers and layers of nonsense."
Through these three media, I have attempted to peel away the "nonsense" and unearth some of the truth:
we share layers of common experience.

Paintings: Through the layers of textures, the distressing of surfaces and the symbols which emerge and recede, the
paintings reference ancient cultures. We place ourselves into the context of history and question our role.

Scuptures: Cast silicone enttraps writings and artifacts that chronicle turning points in personal histories. We supply the
connections between these objects and stories.

Mirrors: The mirros reveal the identity of particular subjects who described themselves in six words or phrases.
As we see our reflections in the mirror with these words superimposed, do we judge or empathize with our subjects?

“Fish Tales and Other Stories” by Andrea V. Uravitch consists of a series of nature installations and stand alone sculptures that invite viewers to contemplate their relationship to nature.

One room articulates childhood memories of nature. A variety of fish and photos of Alaska make up a second room, while a third explores insects and lizards and their often overlooked beauty. There are also crows, as well as a series of birds in flight.

All of the animals, birds, insects, and fish have been hand crafted, using a number of different techniques: welded steel armatures, ceramics, acrylic paint, sewn fabric, fiber, wire constructions and handmade paper.

Since "Converging Forces", her 1991 installation of 75 fish, branch traps and various flotsam that dealt with man versus nature, a central theme in Uravitch's work has been the concern about how man and nature interact . Crows, impacted heavily by the West Nile Virus in Northern Virginia a few years ago, have been showing up in her installations since the mid nineties. Alaska trips in 2002 and 2004 with observations of declining numbers of salmon spawning in streams, melting glaciers and disappearing icebergs, further focused the artist's attention on themes such as nature's beauty and fragility, as well as our relationship and responsibility towards it.

Pat Segnan's Show At Anne C Fisher Gallery

Galley 10 artist Pat Segnan is having a show of “drawn” paintings at the Anne C. Fisher Gallery in Washington, DC. The works on view are full color renditions of a series of minimalist line drawings made last year, and published in a small press book, entitled Disegni. The book was published at the Centro Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia, and the books and original drawings were shown in October of ’06 at Galleria Venezia Viva, in Venice.

The current exhibit will open on Friday, February 16th, from 6-8 pm, at the Anne C Fisher Gallery, at 1054 31st St. NW, Mezzanine level. Telephone is 202.625.7555.
